Guide to Cleaning

As you live in a shared house make cleaning a group activity.

Making cleaning a team effort is one of the best ways to clean a house fast. Schedule a time in advance with your housemates, and assign tasks to each person. Working together can add some fun to cleaning, and your house will be sparkling in no time.

1. Before you start, put on some awesome lively music. The kind that will keep you motivated and dancing while you clean.

2. Pick up all the clutter around the communal area and return to its rightful place, those glasses on the coffee table, that cup left in your individual bedroom or on the dining table. The magazines, newspapers or books that may be lying somewhere can either go in the recycle bin or stored in a box, drawer or cupboard somewhere. Those sneakers/heels in your room – consider whether you should put it away, toss it or donate it.

3. Gather all your cleaning tools in a caddy, bucket, tote or box, having everything you need to clean in one portable place makes it much easier to get the job done. You won’t waste time looking for tools while you clean, and don’t have to worry about gathering them before your next go around.

4. Ok now you’re ready to START. First and foremost, take the vacuum and hoover all the communal areas, kitchen, living room, hallways, even the shared bathroom. Individuals should naturally do their own rooms.

5. Dust each room using a damp microfibre cloth with warm water.

a) The topsides of all the furniture only if it’s leather,

b) The undersides of shelves,

c) All handrails & window sills,

d) All picture frames and knickknacks (excluding any canvas pictures),

e) Desks and top side of your bed frame in your individual rooms,

f) TV screens should be dusted with a dry dust using this vvvvvv

6. Wipe mirrors and glass with a dust free damp microfibre cloth followed by a dry microfibre cloth. Feel free to use something like a Mr Sheen

7. In the kitchen, disinfect countertops and surface areas:

Spray countertop anti-bacterial on countertops and wipe away. Any other hard surfaces like appliances such as washing machine, dishwasher fridge/freezer and microwave, can be wiped with a damp warm microfibre cloth.

Pro cleaning tip 1: Make a nontoxic disinfection solution by mixing one-fourth to a half cup of white or apple cider vinegar with a cup of warm water.

Pro cleaning tip 2: Be sure to wipe down all places that fingers touch, like door handles, light switches, TV remotes and phones. "Those are the places that people forget, and they really hold germs," – use an all-purpose wet wipe for ease and quickness

8. Focus on tubs, sinks and toilets. Spray cleaner on the kitchen sink then on bathroom sinks, tubs and toilets. Let it sit for a few minutes so the cleaner has time to dissolve dirt and stains. Then return to the kitchen and start scrubbing, rinse and work your way back up to the bathroom to repeat the step.

Pro Cleaning Tip

a) Place bath mat in tub/shower

b) Wet tub/shower walls with warm water

c) Apply tile and grout cleaner, allow to sit

d) Stand on bath mat and scrub tub/shower walls and door

e) Scrub the walls where you’ve applied the tile and grout cleaner

f) Rinse walls of tub/shower and dry with microfiber cloth

g) Shower/bath screens should be cleaned too with a multi-purpose glass cleaner and wiped with microfibre or jay cloth.

9. Sweep, (only if you have not vacuumed) then mop the kitchen and bathroom floors. Start mopping from the farthest corner of the room and move backwards towards the doorway (that is, don’t mop yourself into a corner). Rinse the mop every time you complete a 4-by-4-foot area.

10. Finally, clean all the garbage bins including the little wastebaskets in the bathroom and en-suite if your that lucky person that has one.

That’s it your all done and your house is now SPOTLESS. ENJOY IT!
